M. Ed from Livingston Univsersity in elementary education with a concentration in reading

My teaching career began at Sumter Academy. For one year, I taught third grade. After moving to Monroeville, I began teaching second grade at Monroe Academy. I taught for two years before starting my family. When my son started to school, I substituted on a regular basis at Monroe. Later I worked for four years as secretary with Home Care Services, a home health agency. I finally returned to Monroe Academy to work as the secretary. After being in the office for four years, I moved over to the library as librarian. I have been teaching accelerated reader for seventh and eighth grades for several years. Also for the past couple of years I have taught junior high English/Literature.

During my time at Monroe I have coordinated the Accelerated Program, sponsored scholars bowl, and Key Club. This year I also assisted in the office each day.

I grew up in Uriah, Alabama and attended J. U. Blacksher school. After graduating from Blacksher, I attended Patrick Henry Jr. College. When I married Van Pickens, we moved to Livingston, Alabama, where we both attended Livingston University. After completing our education, we moved to Monroeville. I have one son, Johnny, who graduated from M.A. in 1995. He lives in Cedar Park, Texas and works as a civil engineer in Austin, Texas with Stan Tec. He is married to the former Mary Jonakin, a Wilcox alum, and they have two sons, Cristian 16 and Brady 13. I attend the Monroeville Prebyterian Church and am treasurer of Delta Kappa Gamma teacher society.
