Summer Reading 10th-12th Grades

 

10th Grade

Students may choose one of the following novels to read this summer.  On the first full day of school, students will test on the novel they have chosen.  Students will also have an in-class writing assignment based on their chosen novel that will be completed the first week of school.

11th Grade

Students entering the eleventh grade must read two books.  Both are required books for that grade.  All students are required to take a test on the books read during the summer.  These tests may be given during the summer or they may be taken the first full day of school.  If the tests are taken during the summer, the student must call the office and make an appointment to take the tests.  Tests given during the summer through the school office will not be offered during the last two weeks before school starts.  Juniors will not be required to do book reports.  Instead, each test will count twice.

12th Grade

Summer Reading 4th-6th Grades

 

4th Grade

Over the summer, upcoming 4th grade students are required to read and write a book report on The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling.  The book report form is attached.  The book report is due on the first day of school.  We will also discuss and take a quiz on the book.  The book can be ordered from Scholastic, Barnes and Noble, or Amazon for around $6.00. 

5th Grade

Students entering the fifth grade will read Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson.  This book needs to be purchased and brought to school the first week of school.  We will discuss the characters, setting, and the plot.  Students are expected to be able to discuss the book.  A book test will be given at the end of the week. 

6th Grade

Students entering sixth grade will read Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis.  This book needs to be purchased and brought to school the first week of school.  We will discuss the characters, setting, and the plot.  Students are expected to be able to discuss the book.  A book test will be given at the end of  

 

 

3rd Grade Summer Reading

Students entering third grade must read one of the following books and complete the book report form.  Book report forms must be turned in to the teacher on the first day of school.  Book report forms will be included in each student's report card for the school year.

2nd Grade Summer Reading

Students entering second grade are required to read six books this summer from the following list.  Each book chosen must by a different author.  Brief summaries of four of the books should be completed in the student's own handwriting.  There should be two to five complete sentences in each summary.  Book report forms will be included in each student's final report card for this school year.

1st Grade Summer Reading

Students entering first grade must read ten of the following books and complete the book report form.  Book report forms will be included in each student's final report card for this school year.

The goal of our summer reading program is to read for pleasure and learn to love books!  Most of the children entering first grade will need guidance from parents to read these books.  Parents should read the books orally, allowing children to read the words they know.  Parents should stop occasionally to ask questions about the story. Only 5 books can be read from the ABeka Enrichment Library Reading Pack.

Kindergarten Summer Reading

Students entering Monroe Academy's five-year-old kindergarten program are required to have ten of the following books read to them orally by a parent or other adult.  The adult that reads the book, as well as the child, must sign the book report forms.  The forms should be submitted to the student's K5 teacher on the first day of school.  Book report forms will be included in each student's final report card for this school year.
